Want to know which websites allow freelance writers to write for them? Do a search for “Write for Us”.
Some of the better paying freelance jobs come from established websites having both the audience and the revenue to pay their writers well. After you have established an online portfolio of your work either from paid jobs or posting on a free blog platform, I recommend contacting websites that solicit freelance writers to write for them with a “Write for Us” or “Writer’s Guidelines Page”.
Before contacting, be sure you are familiar with the website and the types of topics they cover so you don’t pitch them an idea they have already covered or not likely to be interested in.
Finding these websites and pitching to them might take a little more time but in the long run will be well worth the effort and give you a continuing market for your work.
Here are some of the markets I found using the search term “Write for Us” and “Writer’s Guidelines” in Google.
Other ways to find markets to write for is to pick out a website in your area of expertise and then look for a link (sometimes at the bottom, sometimes on the About or Contact Us page that relates to submission or writers’ guideline. In some cases, using the search site feature will work.)

Hopscotch
We are looking for lively writing, most of it from a young girl’s point of view, with the girl or girls directly involved in an activity that is both wholesome and unusual. Examples have included girls in a sheep to shawl contest, girls raising puppies that are destined to guide the blind and girls who take summer ballet lessons from members of the New York City Ballet.
While on the subject of nonfiction, remembering that we use it 3 to 1 over fiction, those pieces that are accompanied by clear photos with high resolution are far more likely to be accepted than those that need illustrations.
The ideal length of a HOPSCOTCH nonfiction piece is 500 words or less, although we are not about to turn down a truly exceptional piece if it is slightly longer than the ideal. We prefer fiction to not run over 1000 words
We will entertain simultaneous submissions as long as that fact is noted on the manuscript. Submissions should be double-spaced.
We will pay a minimum of 5 cents a word for both fiction and nonfiction, with additional payment given if the piece is accompanied by appropriate photos or art. We will pay a minimum of $10 per poem or puzzle, with variable rates offered for games, crafts, cartoons, and the like.

Gardening/DIY/Home Improvement
Back Home
BackHome is a down-to-earth, how-to magazine whose primary purpose is to help people gain more control over their own lives by doing more for themselves. We are looking for interesting, lively, preferably first-person articles based upon actual experience in the fields of gardening, home construction and repair, workshop projects, cooking, crafts, outdoor recreation, family activities and vacations, livestock, home business, home-based and other education, and community/neighborhood action. At present our base rate of pay is $35 a printed page, payable upon publication. We pay extra for good clear photographs
Back Woods Home
Backwoods Home Magazine is a country- and self-reliance-oriented “how to” magazine that specializes in showing people how to build their own home, produce independent energy, grow their own food, and how to make a living without being tied to a city. We also cover related subjects such as health, raising animals, food preservation, country skills, home schooling, arts and crafts, recipes, and book reviews.
Our readers value their independence above all else. They want to do things for themselves, without help or interference from big government or big business. They are not looking for opinion or entertainment, but for hard facts on how to do things better. We print articles by people who are doing things. We rarely print articles by professional writers about what other people are doing. Your subject must be something you have actually done, not just researched.
Payment ranges from $30 to $200 per article, payable upon acceptance.
Canadian Gardening
Canadian Gardening is a national magazine aimed at the avid home gardener. Our readers are city gardeners with tiny lots, country gardeners with rolling acreage, indoor gardeners, rooftop gardeners, and enthusiastic beginners and experienced veterans. A good reading of the magazine will make you more familiar with the types of articles we look for.
Each issue includes at least one beautiful-garden story with lots of lush photographs. It has general esthetic appeal, but also a particular focus such as a specific style or a design challenge, which discusses how the homeowner solved problems of terrain or climate, fulfilled special needs or capitalized on features, etc.
We also publish practical pieces on growing varieties of ornamentals, fruits or vegetables, on gardening techniques such as mulching and composting, and on projects such as ponds or water details, bird houses, etc. We also publish stories on the environment.
Depending on complexity of story and amount of work involved, our rates range from $125 and up for short news items, reviews, or how-to pieces (200 to 400 words), to $350 and up for features (about 500 to 2,000 words). Fees for each story are set by the editor at the time of assignment. We pay on acceptance, and cover reasonable expenses such as long-distance calls to gather research and out-of-town mileage to do interviews. Receipts are required.

Greeting Cards
Blue Mountain Arts
What we are looking for: Contemporary prose or poetry written from personal experience that reflects the thoughts and feelings people today want to communicate to one another, but don’t always know how to put into words. Because our cards capture genuine emotions on topics such as love, friendship, family, missing you, and other real-life subjects, we suggest that you have a friend, relative, or someone else in your life in mind as you write. Writings on special occasions (birthday, anniversary, congratulations, etc.), as well as the challenges, difficulties, and aspirations of life are also considered. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with our products prior to submitting material, but don’t study them too hard. We are looking for new, original, and creative writings that do not sound like anything we have already published. We pay $300 per poem for the worldwide, exclusive rights to publish it on a greeting card and other products, and $50 per poem for one-time use in a book. Publication procedures will be explained in detail prior to actually publishing your work.

We are currently seeking copy and artwork for Selfish Kitty, which is edgy but not cruel or degrading. Additionally we are open to receiving submissions of copy and artwork that we may consider for other lines at a future date.
Oatmeal Studios
Card ideas need to be written for these occasions: Birthday, 21st, 30th, 40th, 50th & 60th, Relative Birthday, Belated Birthday, Get Well, Good-Bye, Miss You & Thank You, Love, Wedding, New Baby, Anniversary (from friend to couple), Congratulations & Retirement. Because cards and pads are sent from one person to another as a greeting or message, they should read the way people really talk.
