People love the idea of  finding work from home jobs! And, more and more, companies love the idea of  hiring homeworkers!

According to the National Study of Employers, produced by the Society for Human Resource Management and the Families and Work Institute, in 2012, 63 percent of companies allowed employees to telecommute from home compared with 34 percent in 2005.

In spite of this seemingly high number of companies that allow employees to telecommute, the U.S. Census Bureaus reported the number of  those working from home at least one day each week at 9.5 percent in 2010, which was a 7 percent increase from 1997.

Besides companies like United Health and Aetna who hire  nurses,  physicians, customer service representatives, claims processors, network managers, communications and human resources professionals, lawyers, underwriters, actuaries and other virtual jobs, there are also companies who offer working remotely part-time as a benefit.

Why this trend? As an article about Aetna  in the Chicago Tribune reports, “Through telecommuting, the company has cut 2.7 million square feet of office space at $29 a square foot, for about $78 million in cost savings a year including utilities, housekeeping, mail service and document shredding.”

Based on this growing awareness among companies of the benefits of teleworkers, the very best option for becoming a homeworker is talking your present employer into allowing you to do so.

The next best thing is to start looking on-line for companies that hire virtual workers. Be aware in your job search that while there are companies who provide benefits to their virtual employees, the majority hire telecommuters as freelance contract workers. This means the employer is not required to pay benefits, withhold payroll taxes or pay social security and Medicare taxes. All of which adds up to another big savings for the employer.

In exchange, the contract worker is like any other independent business owner in that they can set their own prices and pick or choose when and if they work. They can also save on taxes by writing off  expenses  used in the their job: internet, telephone, home office, travel expense,etc.

To learn how to find work from home you will need to learn what kind of telecommuting jobs are available and decide which are right for you. It may also mean developing new skills that are more conducive to the homeworker environment. And, like with any job search, it will mean polishing up your resume and possibly developing an online presence or portfolio to make it easier for clients to contact you.

Understand that just because these companies  have hired telecommuters in the past it does not mean they necessarily have a job opening at this time. If there are not any jobs open, remember  it does not hurt to have your résumé on file for when job openings do open up.
